Dusk was already gathering when I went outside to let the warriors calm down. The weight of my men’s disappointment a stone in my stomach, I sat on a stump with an arm laced around the wolf’s neck.

“I know I did wrong, but I could not leave him. All these years, and I was the only one who saw the Grey Man, much less stood against him. I am used to absorbing their evil power and bearing the consequences. It may be all I am fit to do.”

Gunnr licked my face. I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his pelt, surprisingly silky and soft. We waited like that while the line of trees swallowed the orange ball of fire.

My actions gnawed at me. These warriors had done nothing but risk themselves to protect and love me. They cared for me, and put my life above their own.

Perhaps they were worthy of my submission. Erik had spoken of obedience, and it rankled, but whenever I chose to bow to their rule, I felt peace. Was that another sign of my true nature? The spaewife magic that also caused my heated desires?

Gunnr whimpered and I loosened my grip on his fur.

“Whatever I do, defy or submit, it will be my choice. But I am tired of fighting my true nature. I have enemies enough.” I bit my lip. Maybe I could follow the warrior’s lead, for at least a little while.

“Fleur,” Arne called from the hut entrance.

I rose to face whatever my warriors had planned. Submission wouldn’t be easy, but if I trusted them to care for me, I could surrender. Deep down I knew they would never hurt me. The strict rules were part of how they cared for me. Besides, obedience soothed their beast. If it helped heal them, I could take a little punishment. I owed it to them.

Once inside, I took my place on a little stool they’d made for me from the section of a log.

Instead of standing over me, the warriors crouched close, all trace of anger washed away by worry.

Erik took my hand. “We need ye to understand something. Ye are everything to us.”

I swallowed hard. Tears pricked my eyes.

“We have waited so long to have ye. We cannae lose ye. It would be our undoing.”

Arne nodded in silent agreement.

“So we will guard ye carefully. Ye are never to go anywhere without one of us, ye ken?”

“I understand.” I said in a hoarse voice. The hope and concern in their face made me want to weep.

“You belong to us, as surely as we belong to you. We knew it the moment we met you.” Arne swept the robe around my shoulders, wrapping me in his scent.

“There is nothing we wouldn’t do for ye. We will rid this island of Grey Men to make it safe for ye to walk anywhere you please.”

“Until then, will you obey us? Help us protect you. We are not strong enough to lose you.”

Gunnr pressed to my side.
